Read ‘The Six-Foot’ in Gutter 14

I was delighted last April when my short story The Six-Foot was included in Gutter 14, one of Scotland’s leading literary journals of new writing. As well as my own piece the latest issue contains some incredible stories and poetry, including work by Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap fame. You  can buy it from the Freight Books or from Amazon.

The Six-Foot

I think the reason I find it hard to write this down is because I’m mostly ignorant and dumb and the more I think about things the more I realise I don’t know anything. I’m not sure it matters much anyway but here it is:

In the summer of 2015 I was working on the railways, mostly on the West Coast Mainline, refurbishing footbridges. I stripped off the flaky paint and rust with a flap-disc grinder and needle gun, cleaned it with standard thinners and recoated it in thick alloy primer that stuck to my skin. I scratched and peeled it off in the shower afterward, leaving my arms pink and new.
